Book Launch, "Pisim Finds Her Miskanow"
by Elder William Dumas
illustrated by Leonard Paul
Date: Thursday, September 19, 2013
Time: 7 pm
Place: The Manitoba Museum, 190 Rupert Avenue

In 1993, the remains of a young woman were discovered at Nagami Bay, Southern Indian Lake, Manitoba. Out of that important archaeological discovery came this unique story about a week in the life of Pisim, a young Cree woman, who lived in the mid 1600s. In the story, created by renowned storyteller William Dumas, Pisim begins to recognize her miskanow – her life’s journey – and to develop her gifts for fulfilling that path. The story is brought to life by the rich imagery of Leonard Paul, and is accompanied by sidebars on Cree language and culture, archaeology and history, maps, songs, and more.

During the 2011-2012 year, Brooklands students in Grade 4/5 were a part of the reviewing and development of this new book!  They had a chance to listen to the authors tell the story as it was being created and learn about the importance of the Cree language.  It will be exciting to see "Pisim Finds Her Miskanow" added to our Learning Commons Collection.

Our Triad Conferences are coming to a close today and our halls have been full of happy reunions between students and staff.  It is always so welcoming to see so many families come to the school with big smiles.  I found it very warming to see how many students and parents were surprised by my summer beard!  See the picture on the right...

We are also happy to note a rise in opening registrations.  Pictured on the left are some of today's new registrations alone!

Staff are excited to start this year's learning journeys.  As we do each year, all staff will be on duty outside the school during the first full week of classes (before school, at lunch and during recesses).

We look forward to greeting families Friday morning for a full day of learning fun!
